This ship did full honour to its name with its use, as the British Navy used it for research cruises in the northern seas. She was built accordingly - her design and profile was tailored to withstand the crushing grip of the ice. She had already taken part in an expedition to the Arctic in 1875 and was also part of the expedition that carried Captain Scott when he first conquered the South Pole. The ship was 52.5m long at the waterline, displaced 1620 tons and had a steam engine of 450 h.p.
The model is standard, even includes figures of Capt. Scott and several dogs. The kit includes mouldings of the ship, plastic sails, flags and a couple of stickers, and thread-thin plastic ladders.
The HMS Discovery of 1874 was a British expedition ship that played a key role in polar exploration in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ship took part in several important expeditions, including the expedition led by Captain George Nares in 1875-1876 and later in the expeditions led by Robert Falcon Scott in the Antarctic explorations. HMS Discovery was modified and equipped for the harsh polar conditions, enabling her to carry out thorough explorations and mapping of these challenging areas. These expeditions made the ship a symbol of courage, research and contributed to the expansion of knowledge of the polar regions and their geography. Her role in British polar exploration has earned her a prominent place in the history of naval research. After her service and initial deployment, the ship was later displayed as a museum exhibit in Dundee, Scotland, commemorating the era of polar expeditions and exploration.
