The rails are based on the original plans from the book CSS Alabama by Andrew Bowcock. A diagram of these plans is attached along with instructions for the placement of each rail. These rails carried the wheels of the heavy gun carriages and protected the wooden deck from damage and ultimately prevented the guns from being difficult to handle.
