The Russian frigate Oryol was built in 1668 during the reign of Tsar Alexei I. The frigate served in the Russian Tsarist fleet and played an important role in several naval conflicts of the time. The name "Oryol" means "eagle" in Russian. During its service, the frigate Oryol was involved in various military operations. Her presence was known during the Russo-Turkish Wars of the 17th century, when the Russian fleet faced the Ottoman Empire. Oryol also took part in battles in the Baltic Sea.
The frigate Oryol was built of wood and was equipped with sails and cannons. Compared to modern vessels, however, it was very small. During the 17th century frigates were a common type of warship, combining the power of gunfire with relatively good sailing qualities.
