U.S.S. Hartford was launched 22.11.1858. After her launch she was sent to India and China, After the outbreak of the Civil War she was called back and armed in Philadelphia. She participated as flagship in the blockade of Confederate ports in the Gulf of Mexico and on the Mississippi. Here was her most important period. She took part in the victorious capture of New Orleans and later in the fighting on the Mississippi River. After the Civil War she was used for various purposes, for representative cruises, as a training and practice ship. Among other things, she was used as a hospital ship at Mare Island from 1890-99. From October 1899 she was again used in the Atlantic after refitting as a training ship. She was out of service from 1926 until 1945 when she was designated a national monument. She was towed to the State Dockyard in Norfolk. However, progressive deterioration caused her to sink in the harbour in 1956. She was recovered but subsequently scrapped.
