Violin block – This special block consisted of one larger and one smaller sheave positioned one above the other. The violin block was initially used where a double block was needed for tightening sheets or heavily loaded tackles – for example, for hoisting individual sections of masts and large yards, or for tightening top stays. Over time, in the 19th century, these blocks were replaced by standard double blocks.
