Plans for the Mercury - Mercury
Russian brig "Mercurii - Mercury" - history:
The brig "Mercury" with 20 guns was launched in Sevastopol in 1819. The shipbuilder I. Ya. Osminin conceived "Mercury" as a special ship for protection of the Caucasian coast and patrol service. "On May 14 (26), 1829, during the Russo-Turkish War, three Russian ships - frigate "Standart", brig's "Orpheus" and "Mercury" were on guard duty at the Bosphorus and spotted a Turkish squadron of 14 ships. The enemy squadron rushed in pursuit of the Russian ships. 'Standard' and 'Orpheus' quickly broke away from the pursuit and 'Merkur' under the command of Lieutenant-Commander A.I. Kazarsky fought the best ships of the Turkish squadron with 110 guns of 'Selimiye' and 74 guns of 'Real Bey'. "The 'Merkur', with the help of oars and skilful manoeuvring, masterfully dodged the salvos, firing at the masts and sails of the enemy ships. This unequal battle, unprecedented in history, lasted about four hours. "The 'Selimiye' and 'Real Bay' received critical damage which prevented them from further pursuit of the Mercury. "The 'Mercury' took 22 hull hits, over 300 hits to her sails, rigging and spars, but managed to rejoin her squadron. The crew of the "Mercury" was decorated and the brig received a commemorative flag and the St. George's flag.
