History on Wikipedia
The Alabama's history began in northwest England, where she was launched as a civilian ship in 1862 at the Birkenhead, Merseyside shipyards. Her basic dimensions were: length 67m, beam 9.6m and draft 4.3m. From there she sailed to the Azores and was fitted out for the newly formed Confederate Navy under the command of Capt. Raphael Semmens. The steamship was armed with 6 guns alongside and two massive long-range guns, which were placed in the axis of the ship and could rotate. The front calibre was 178 mm and the rear calibre 207. The steam engine had a power of 300 horsepower and turned a brass twin-bladed screw. With the help of sails and steam, the ship was able to reach speeds of up to 25.5 km/h.
Off the coast of the Bahamas, the captain recruited most of the crew, which together consisted of 120 sailors and 24 officers. The ship sailed across the Atlantic, sinking ships of the enemy and their allies. In two years, she sank 65 ships, mostly cargo ships. She became a literally unattainable terror. It wasn't until 11 June 1864 that the Allied ship U.S.S. Kearsarge encountered her and sank her in battle. 41 of her crew, including the captain, were rescued. The wreck was later discovered and you can read information about it HERE.
