History on Wikipedia
The name Pedro Nunes was given to the famous clipper Thermopylae after it was purchased by the Portuguese Navy in 1895. In 1903, the ship became an important coal carrier. However, she found an inglorious end on September 13, 1907, when she was sunk. The sinking occurred during a naval parade during the Portuguese Estoril Festival. In the presence of the royal family at the time, a naval parade took place, and as part of the celebrations, two other clippers were sunk by gunfire, eventually torpedoing the Pedro Nunes. This was the inglorious end of this famous ship.
Nowadays, her wreck is visited by divers as a renowned monument to the faded glory of sail.
