She was launched in 1861 and belonged to the Mohican class.
One of the most famous incidents in the history of the USS Kearsarge was the collision with the Confederate corvette CSS Alabama in June 1864. The CSS Alabama, under the command of Captain Ralph Semmes, was famous for her corsair action against the Union. The two ships clashed at the Battle of Cherbourg in the North Atlantic. Kearsarge was under the command of Captain John A. Winslow at the time.
The battle took place on June 19, 1864 and ended in victory for the USS Kearsarge. Kearsarge was better armored and equipped with more guns. With these advantages and well-executed tactics, Kearsarge was able to disable CSS Alabama, which she eventually sank. This event boosted Union morale and became a famous moment in the naval history of the American Civil War.
The USS Kearsarge continued in naval service throughout the Civil War until her decommissioning in 1894. After many years of service and significant moments, the USS Kearsarge remains an important part of American naval history.
