The Viking ship Oseberg is a fascinating example of Viking shipbuilding, discovered in 1904 in Oseberg, Norway, near Tønsberg. This wooden ship, dating back to the mid-9th century, has become a key archaeological find, providing important insights into Viking culture, seafaring skills and burial rituals.
The Oseberg has dimensions of approximately 21.5 metres in length and 5.1 metres in width, typical of Viking ships of the time. Her characteristic shape with a high forecastle and low stern provides an insight into Viking naval architecture.
The significance of the Oseberg lies not only in the physical discovery of the ship, but also in the fact that it was found in a burial mound along with a rich array of artefacts. In addition to the ship itself, wooden carts, beds, textiles, vessels and art objects were discovered. These objects provide a unique insight into Viking life, ceremonies and craft skills.
Oseberg's ship was richly decorated with wooden carvings and ornaments, highlighting Viking aesthetics and craftsmanship. Thanks to careful restoration, this exceptional ship is now on display at the Oseberg Museum at the University of Oslo, allowing visitors to explore the beauty and history of Viking ships and culture.
